Flash your ESP8266

This page installs the GPS-NTP firmware directly from your web browser. No Arduino IDE, compiler, Python, or command line is required.

You need:

Important: Browser flashing uses the Web Serial interface. Chrome or Edge is recommended. Safari does not currently support the required Web Serial connection.

Step 1 — Enter your six-character name or callsign

Enter up to six characters. The ESP8266 Wi-Fi network will be named NTP-XXXXXX.

New Wi-Fi SSID:

NTP-WA1RBB

Step 2 — Connect the ESP8266

Plug the ESP8266 into the computer with USB. Then press:

Step 3 — Flash the firmware

Waiting for ESP8266 connection.

Flasher log

What this flasher does

The firmware contains the original Wi-Fi SSID:

NTP-VU3CER

The browser makes a temporary copy of the known-good firmware, changes only that fixed ten-byte SSID field, and flashes the resulting firmware into the ESP8266.

For example:

Original: NTP-VU3CER

You enter: K1TE

Firmware: NTP-K1TE

Shorter names are automatically padded internally so the firmware remains exactly the same size.

The original firmware stored on this web server is never modified.

After flashing

  1. The ESP8266 will automatically reset.
  2. Wait a few seconds for it to boot.
  3. Look at the Wi-Fi networks on your phone or computer.
  4. You should see your new network name, for example:

NTP-K1TE

If your phone still shows an old network name, turn Wi-Fi off and back on, or tell the phone to forget the old network.

About the project

This GPS-NTP project uses an ESP8266 and GPS receiver to provide a simple network time reference and teaching platform.

The web flasher is designed so students, amateur-radio operators, experimenters, and friends can install the firmware without first installing a development environment.
