A great way to start your algae farm is by using two clean 2-liter soda bottles and a couple of drinking straws. A convenience store or your school cafeteria may be happy to give you a few if you ask nicely!
Take one of the straws and gently pinch or bend the top, like you see here on the green straw. Your fingers are all you need to make a snug fit.
Push the pinched end of one straw into the other until they fit tightly. You should be able to blow gently into one end while covering the other and feel little to no air escaping. This long, silly straw becomes your CO2 delivery system—blow gently into the bottles a few times each day to give your algae a breath of life!
Here’s the finished straw placed into the bottle. My mom might have told me to be careful not to poke my eye out—but don’t worry, it’s totally safe with gentle hands and a little common sense.
